Dear BFA 9th and 11th-grade students and families,

This spring, BFA will administer the Vermont Comprehensive Assessment Program (VTCAP) April 1st - 4th. These assessments, provided by Cognia, replaced the Smarter Balanced Assessment and Vermont Science Assessment and are designed to measure student learning in alignment with statewide academic standards.

Who Takes the VTCAP?

  • English Language Arts (ELA) & Mathematics: Administered annually to students in grades 3 through 9.

  • Science: Given to students in grades 5, 8, and 11.

The ELA and mathematics assessments measure students’ mastery of the Common Core State Standards, while the science assessment evaluates proficiency in the Next Generation Science Standards. These tests are computer-adaptive, meaning they adjust to a student’s ability level and include various accessibility features to support all learners.

Why These Assessments Matter

These assessments provide valuable insights into student learning, helping families and educators understand academic progress and instructional effectiveness. The results allow us to:

  • Identify areas of strength and areas for growth.

  • Inform and refine our teaching practices.

  • Guide curriculum development and program improvements.

  • Support students through our Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) by providing targeted resources.

  • Compare our performance with other schools at the local, state, and national levels.

Student Reports & Privacy

When individual student reports become available, we will share them with families. These reports offer a snapshot of student learning in relation to state academic standards. However, it’s important to consider them alongside other assessments and classroom performance for a more comprehensive understanding of student progress. Vermont’s test delivery system is equipped with state-of-the-art security features that ensure student privacy and comply with all federal and state confidentiality regulations.

Preparing for the VTCAP

To help students feel confident and prepared, two Advisory sessions in March will include activities designed to familiarize them with the test format and expectations. We encourage families to talk with their students about the importance of these assessments—emphasizing that they are an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge and skills. Encouraging students to take the test seriously and put forth their best effort not only supports their individual growth but also strengthens our shared commitment to academic excellence at BFA.

Thank you for your partnership and support.
