WELCOME TO BFA SCIENCE & DESIGN TECHNOLOGY

The Bellows Free Academy Science Department/Design Technology is a fantastic group of dynamic teachers that are willing to go the extra mile to ensure student learning and understanding. We are more like a “family” than a department! We work hard to create an environment that is conducive to learning while offering many strategies for students to demonstrate their levels of understanding.

I am in 22nd year teaching science here at BFA. I am excited to work with students and spend time helping them explore the world through the lens of science. I have taught Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, Earth Science and AP Biology.
When not at school I enjoy reading fiction, gardening, cooking and then eating my culinary creations, and spending time with my husband Ryan who is a carpenter and our children Addy (18) and Jack (16). I am a native Vermonter and enjoy getting outside to enjoy our beautiful state

If you know me, you know that I love 3 things: babies, teenagers, and live music. If there is a local live band, I’m always sitting front row - enjoying the music and people watching - but NEVER dancing. I have been married for 16 years and have 5 kids. Landon is 17, Sadie is 15, Paxton is 11, Finn is 7 and Harvie will be two in December. We believe everything should be done as a family, and if you see me at the grocery store, you may actually see all 7 of us at the grocery store!
I have been a Science teacher at BFA for 12 years and still get giddy for the first day of school every year. My mantra? Be Kind. Always.

I grew up in Southern Vermont, and have moved to a few different states before setting back down in northern Vermont. I have a bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences and a Masters degree in teaching.
I worked in Colorado for 2 years as Conservation Corps Leader. I was responsible for coordinating with state employees and building trails, and helping to maintain campsites. I also worked for Nature’s Classroom, an outdoor education program for middle schoolers, for a few seasons in both Massachusetts and Maine.
When I’m not at work I like to hike, but I also paint and play the saxophone in a local group in Williston.

I am a lifelong St. Albans area resident and graduated from BFA in 2000. I have been teaching science and running the gaming club at BFA since 2007. My wife Carrie and I live in Georgia with our two boys, Mason (center) and Ethan (right).
We enjoy spending summers on Lake Champlain and vacationing with family. We try to get outdoors as much as we can to go fishing, golfing, swimming, and hiking. My wife and I stay very busy watching our kids play hockey, soccer, and lacrosse. I like to exercise regularly by walking, mowing the lawn, hiking, and working out. I enjoy yard sales, listening to music and audiobooks, and time with family and friends.

I began teaching at BFA in the 2006-2007 school year. Since then, I have taught many courses at BFA including Physics, Chemistry, AP Physics, Scientific Research & Design and Environmental Science. Prior to teaching, I earned a degree from UVM in Chemistry and worked in an Environmental Testing Laboratory.
Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my family hiking, biking, skiing and adventuring around my family’s dairy farm. We have a milking herd of 1100 Holsteins, so at times during the summer, you may see me driving some large piece of equipment!

I grew up in NY. Since graduating from high school, I have lived in 5 states and 2 countries. I started my career as a mechanical engineer, but changed to teaching after serving with the Peace Corps. While in the Peace Corps, I learned to cut my lawn with a machete, how to fix my knee after an unfortunate machete accident, what the inside of an active volcano looks like, and why I want to be a teacher. I have been a teacher since 2003 and have been at BFA since 2007.
I’ve hiked most of the mountains in Northern Vermont and often take extended walks on the rail trail and around town. I enjoy playing board and card games and, as can be expected, am a big fan of most science fiction tv shows, movies, and books!

I’m originally from Southern California, but have lived in Vermont for more than 30 years. My wife and I live in South Burlington and have two grown sons, Kyle (26) and Aaron (22). I am a life-long bowler and also coach high school bowling. On my daily commute to BFA I enjoy listening to audiobooks and I play guitar rather poorly in the evenings.
This is my fifth year teaching at BFA. My classes include Intro to CAD, Architectural CAD, Graphic Arts, and multiple levels of Wood Design and Fabrication. I really enjoy teaching these classes as they are creative but also embrace “failures” as part of the process, which is an important and crucial aspect of learning.

I grew up in northern California before moving to the east coast, and I’ve now been in Vermont for several years. I have my undergraduate degree in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology and my Masters in Biology. I love science, and I’ve been lucky enough to do research in several different parts of the world. When I’m not teaching, I love spending time with my dogs, hiking, paddleboarding, reading, and seeing live music.

I have enjoyed helping students learn about Earth Science and Biology at BFA for the last 4 years. When I am not at school I can usually be found spending time with my 4 kids (ages ranging from 9-18) and husband. We can often be found outside, or working on our family maple sugaring bush. I also love to bake bread, cycle, swim, camp, and spend time in my vegetable garden in my spare time

Since 2009, I have taught BFA students in classes such as chemistry, physics, physical science, and AP chemistry. My background is in chemical engineering and, as an engineer, I spent time working in the pharmaceutical, medical device, and industrial gas industries. I really enjoy helping students learn hard things.
In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family. I like to run, bike, hike, read, learn to play the piano, walk my dog, travel, and eat.
